Re: Groaning pre-pump on a 1976 244dl[ALL/1998] posted by Stoney on

I checked my Haynes manual and found the following...
75 and 76 240's had only a main fuel pump but some 76 240's had both a Tank Pump and a Main Pump due to the pressure needs of the FI system. Since the switch was made during the model year it is possible that yoy have the latter system in your 244DL.
Also just because there are hoses, etc going in doesn't mean there is a pump inside, they could be fuel return hoses. Check the lines in tank for collapsed hoses, corroded hoses (they have a way of slowly turning back into prehistoric ooze) a blocked or clogged pick up screen, etc.
Try this...get a long funnel or make one with stiff paper...start the car, let it get to normal idle speed, open the gas cap and put small end of funnel in filler neck...listen at open end for "humming" sound, if it is hearable try pulling fuse 5 (the fuse that controls the tank pump) and see if it changes, if it does the pump is shot...if not mayme a gremlin ha moved into your tank.
Does the noise level change with full tank vs. 1/2 empty-or really empty (red mark on guage)?
