Gas 'Tank Float' Sank[ALL/1998] posted by jb still on

Back in March, my '86 240's (230k miles) gas gage went from full tank, normal operation, to indicating 'empty' in about three days and 45 miles -- it quit working. Today, when I pulled the pre-pump/sending unit from the tank, I discovered that the float had filled up with gas and now weighs more like a golf ball than a ping-pong ball. It actually feels like it is about 80% to 90% full of gas. I can't see, nor do I even have a theory, about how the gas got inside. Rather than waiting until next week for a replacement, I drilled a hole, drained it, and then pluged it -- works fine now.
Quesiton: has anyone seen this before or know what happened? What's the probability it will happen again?
Regards, J.B.Still

The float developed a tiny hole and the gas seeped in,used to happen to carb floats all th time before bettr welding/casting and then better plastic floats.
I'd still get a new one as gas could, will, and peobably is eating away whatever you lugged it with. What did you use and is it liable to dissolve or break down and screw up injectors?
Anyway replace it and maybe the filter just to be safe. While you are at the tank pump, swap out the pick up hose and filter screen/bag as they like to "go south" on no notice as well.
