CD player for 1989 245[ALL/1998] posted by Bryan M. Eagle III on

I have a 1989 volvo 240 wagon with a tape player. I want to put in a cd/tape player combination. I don't want to put in a 6 cd changer under the seat, or in the back, I want the combination in the dash, either where the tape player is now or in the open space in the center console just above the gear shift. Everyone I have talked to said the space in the console isn't big enough and no one makes a cd/tape combo unit that fits where the tape player is now. Surely other people have wanted CD sound and found a way to solve this problem. Can anyone help?

Brian, Both Jensen and Clarion make a Double Din unit tha could fit the opening if it were modified a bit. Try calling Crutchfield and getting the exact dimensions from them for the two untis (they are the same puppy with different names).

The problem will be the face clearance and fit.

I assume that you don't have the triple guage package in your upper dash area, just a funny stash sleeve. You could put a std. ETR Head unit there and a 3 disc player in the lower radio spot.

By the way the lower radio area is EXTREMELY hostile to radios. I've seen a few drowned when the heater core leaked, full of ashes, tapes jammed in when someone put the tranny into park w/out looking. If I was puttin that much bucks in a new system I'd figure a better way.

I've seen smaller units in the past but the present situation is one or the other but not both. Hey could be worse, you could be a Minidisc lover-Maybe thats it!!!Look for a minidisc/cd unit-the mini grive is really thin so I can see the two living in same DIN size chassis.

Other way is to get Blaupunkt tape unit with CD/MD external input cable direct no tape adapter. hang the cable into the old radio spot and have cd palyer there and use a remote.
