Still working on Headlight on 83 240....[ALL/1998] posted by Mark Erickson on

Well I have a Blue and red striped wire that is loose and has waht appears to be a connector for an in line fuse?? and a Black ground wire(which runs to a ground on the fender) with the same type of connector. I ran a jump wire between them and nothing happened. on the Three prong connector for the low beams there is a circuit between the red and black wires but not the Blue Wire (side across from the ground wire) Now I have a Haynes Manual which shows a blue wire going from the Low Beam to a 4 fuse, fuse box. But the wiring Diagrams don't label this fuse box except in the UK Version of the car which says that its a "fusebox headlights Italy"... I can't find it following the wire Bundles.. Any body have any ideas ?????? IT seems that there is no power to the right side headlights... As for the two loose wires they seem to be like the ones which meet in Grey Plastic holders behind the headlights and have small (tiny actually)inline fuses but the left side only has two sets of wires going ionto the connector .. I checked all the fuses in the fuse block, I replaced some and they all are good..
Thanks for any help you can give..

I think that there is an inline fuseable link that maybe toasted. According to my 82 240 Service manual Low Beam is +12 on Blue wire out of terminal 56b on the hd relay and becomes 56b L & R at Bulb fail relay before going to lamps. Hi Beam is +12 on red wire from 56a on hd relay direct to lamps.
Possible melted fuse link, bad wiring/cut wiring bet hd relay, bf relay and lamps or disconnection at bf relay IE: it goes in and only one comes out rt side (56bR term6 on bf relay) is bad, cut, disconnected, blown fuse link...or combination of 2,3 or all!
Pull drivers side under dash panel, push seat back to limit, crawl up/under w/ flashlite in teeth...reach up behind dash and feel for a cylinder about 2" in dia with a bundle o' wires connected to it. Sometimes on a clip fixed to dash support crossmember. (Watch the clip, the sucker is sometimes really sharp and you don't notice it until you look like an extra in "Jason Drives a Volvo to Friday the 13th Reunion")
See if the wire coming from pin 6 i connected - try plugging and unplugging the whole connector and while off look inside for loose pins/sleeves. Check the voltage coming out on 56bR pin 6 and if its +12 you know its downstream to the lamps/connectors at lamps, fuse links.
It's probably the stuff you found but if not check the scenario I have described.

Ok... So far I put in a new Step Relay and that didn't work..
I now have the Bulb Failure Relay pulled out.. there is a grey wire
labelled 31 which has power to the bulb failure relay when the headlight
switch is on. My next guess would be the Dimmer switch possibly?
Also a new thing has developed. the turn signals and emergency flashers
work intermitently especially at night and early morning they work when
they want to. during the heat of the day they work fine. Anybody have any
tricks regarding the dimmer switch ? Thanks for the help so far.
