I had the A/C upgrade to R-134a done last September to my 86 740 by the folks at AutoShow in Seekonk, Mass. It ran just over $300.00 including sales tax. That included a high pressure side hose replacement as well since the original had cracked from age and heat. Since my aunt has an 86 240 wagon, I asked the parts people there if the conversion would be the same, i.e., no compressor replacement. I was told that all 240's, 84 and newer, would not require compressor replacement.
