1990 240DL - Supplemental Restraint Light[ALL/1998] posted by b. stratton on

When the supplemental restraint light came on, I took my car in for repair. The mechanic replaced the switch in the steering column. After only two days of driving the car the SRL came on again. Believing that the switch may have been defective, the mechanic replaced it again. Three days later, the SRL is on again! This is the sequence that precedes the SR light:
When I start the car, the service light comes on
only for several seconds and then goes off
When I next start the car, later that afternoon,
or the next day then the service light stays on
longer maybe 10 secs and then goes off.
Then later the SRL comes on when I start the car
and stays on
The mechanic states that the circuits for the SRL and the service light are separate. So is this just a coincidence I want a working airbag- Any suggestions.

SRS system is a sensitive and potentially dangerous system best left up to persons qualified and experienced to repair them. Have you had it checked at a dealer? Have you any reason to believe that the crash sensor/ECM unit below driver's seat has been wet? (A/C drain stopped up, water leak into driver's side, etc.) The problem could be related to combined instrument (inst. cluster) poor grounds. The SRS warning lamp should not come on and go back off on its own with three exceptions: low voltage to the crash sensor/ECM OR a fault in the crash sensor/ECM OR a fault in the inst cluster or its feed wiring. Again, it can be hazardous working on an SRS system without proper knowledge, experience and training and you should have someone check it out soon.
