Service light reset[ALL/1998] posted by John Ehrhart on

I am sure this has come up before, but I have run a search here and haven't
found the answer. How does one reset the service light? I understand the
'95 850 with OBD I is easily done without a special tool. Is this true?

If you find the answer let me know. I think they make it that way so you have to take it in and pay big bucks to re-set it. Is Volvo any different from any other car dealer. Money is in the Service- or NO service, whatever you call it.

Yes! with OBD I it's possible to correct the service light problem.
Please contact LOE Montreuil at the below e-mail address and he will in detail explain to you how to do it under the hood of your car.

E-mail : mont@subasic.sciatl.com.

I hope he has not changed his e-mail address???

Godd Luck!
By the way I did at one time copy down the method to reset the service lamp
for the OBD I system without the tool, but somehow got lost!

Here is the procedure from two sources. They are identical. I just included both in case that one is not clear then the other one can be used. This procedure is valid for the 850 up to 1995 model year.

Leo Montreuil

1)---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The diagnostic unit under the hood near the washer fluid filler spout.

You will see two small modules there, labeled "A" and "B". "A" has a
short test lead and a push-button with LED.

1. Turn on the ignition but do not start the car.
2. Put the test lead into socket #7 on module "A"
3. Press the button four times, about half a second each time with about
the same space between presses.
4. LED will come on and stay lit. The system is now ready to be
programmed.
5. enter the code 1-5-1
a. press button once, wait for LED to light again
b. press button 5 times, wait for LED to light again
c. press button once, LED should flash several times.
6. switch off ignition, remove test lead from socket and replace
cover on test unit. re-starting the car should now result in no
service light.

2)---------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Procedure for Zeroing Service Reminder Indicator]

1) Turn ignition on [do not start engine].

2) Select position 7 on Diagnostic Connector A [you'll find the diagnostic
box by the left headlamp under the hood...pop the cover off and plug the
fly-connector into slot 7].

3) Depress the button four (4) times, shortly but distinctly.

You now have entered test mode 4.
When the LED emits a steady glow, system is ready to accept code.
Code 1-5-1 = zero service timer
[AllData refers to each sequence of button presses as 1 digit]

4) Enter first digit [1 press] while the LED is still glowing. Wait until
LED starts to emit steady glow again before entering second digit [5
presses]. Repeat procedure for third digit [after the five presses wait for
the steady LED glow again and then press the button one final time].

5) Wait for confirmation from control module by LED giving a couple of
rapid flashes. Zeroing is completed and Service Reminder Indicator is Off

[6) Switch OFF the ignition to exit the manual input mode, replace the
fly-connector in its holder and refit the diagnostic unit cover.]

[7) Switch ON the ignition again and check that the service reminder light
does not illuminate.]

The indicator lamp illuminates for approximately 2 minutes each time the
engine is started until service has been performed and counter reset.
