A Funny thing happened........[ALL/1998] posted by Perry Montgomery on

A funny thing happened on my way to a brake job. Let me begin by telling you that I replaced/rebuilt the front brakes on my "66 122 4dr. (you can imagine the looks I got when I was shopping around for disc brakes for a car built in the 60's.). Eveything went peachy. Next, I thought I would check the back brakes.
This being my first Vovlo, I was not prepared for a tapered axle and the need of a wheel puller. So, off I went to get a wheel puller. To make a longer story short, they would not come off. Here comes the funny part. The "e" brake bar(the one attached to the shoes was but on backwards and the pistons were frozen. So much that a 1/8" lip had formed on the drums making it almost impossible to remove. It seems the last person to the brakes had not idea one about how to do it. The pistons had been sand-blasted(Due to some pitting I assume) so that all the chrome
was taken off. Result, rusted pistons! Each time the brake was applied, they would tighten up and not rerurn to the off position. Took 2hrs with a 3lb sledge hammer to remove the pistons. Cleaned everything up, replaced pistons and rubber. All is well again and I am getting four more miles/gallon.
