850 oil pan protection[ALL/1998] posted by orson on

I was considering the purchase of the oil pan protection shield from IPD for my 1996 850. Has anyone here actually incurred damage to their oil pan?

IPD says that the product was inspired by a number of phone calls from owners inquiring as to whether they had a cheaper alternative to the oil pan. Supposedly, they noticed the high number of calls regarding damaged oil pans when the 850 first came out and created this product. However, I'm still skeptical as to the occurence rate of this problem. In particular, Volvo may have alleviated the problem by the 1996 model year through some process or material modification. Though I do not question the quality of the protection shield, I question the need of such a device for my vehicle. I can't imagine that 850 oil pans are cracking all over the world without Volvo noticing.

Thoughts?

I have seen two broken oil pans from 850's. Both happened on some dirt/rock roads....both were towed to dealer (Cha-ching$$$$)

I bought a skid plate.....very easy install......I posted the following to VCOA last week:

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.....

The wife decided we were going out to see the Christmas lights in a specific
south Everett neighborhood. After dining on a succulent wild boar roast
with all the trimmings (including my three day magiolini rolls) and a great
pecan pie, we loaded in the 855. She drove due to my suffering from some
winter crud. We were almost there when for some unknown reason she swerves
into the center of the road. Over one of the new fangled 5" concrete barier
strips that you could drive over with a car that you have finished paying
for. We straddled the thing for a few hundred feet. The noise was
sickening....

Well needless to say: the skidplate worked excellently...it really has some
great witness marks, and indeed is nicely bent. No other visible damage,
with the exception of one exhaust clamp scrape. Rims look fine.

The Christmas lights were excellent....and we are speaking again.

Have a good one!

Funny how things happen. I thought the same way, could it really be usefull? The way I dirve, how very carefull I am, slow down even for the slightest bump. Figures that I will not be the one to initiate the new skid plate.

Was changing the oil for mom in her car one afternoon after I told her to bring it over for a DIY 14 point, cost of parts, service when she asked to borrow the Volvo to run up to the PO to buy some stamps. Well of course you know what happend on the way back from the PO. "Honey when I was going into the driveway at G'Ma's house on the way back, it sounded like I scraped the front spoiler. I wasn't going that fast and I took it on an angle but it still scraped, a little. You know how her driveway is. I stopped and looked and saw a little scratch up front, sorry."

Upon further investigation underneath the car, low and behold a nice new gouge mark running diagonally from just about the front of the frame right past the oil filter, oh about 3-4 inches long, just where the corner of the oil pan would have been if ye ol skid plate wasn't there.
