S/V70 Rear Bumper Paint Peeling[ALL/1998] posted by Ira Blumberg on

My wife has an S70 in silver. The paint on the rear bumper has started to peel in a few small spots. We have noticed several other S/V70s in the area with the same problem. Some look really bad with spots as big a 3-6 inches where the paint has peeled away. Has anyone else noticed or experience this problem and does anyone know if Volvo is planning to fix it?

Hi: I don't know, but I remember that back in the 1970's when GM and
probably other car manufactures started to use those plastic (some sort
on composite plastic bumpers) paint whould never stick to it, and/or the color
would never match. I would talk to my Volvo dealer asap. Also, I remember
that owners sued (and won) Ford Motor for bad rusting and paint of the
Ford Pinto. I'm dating my self. Good Luck. If they won't listen to you
call Ralph Nader............ Mr. Tool .......

Ira,
Take the car to your dealer. You should have no problem getting this corrected at no charge assuming there is no evidence of an outside influence causing it.
I am not aware of a wide spread problem, but this is what your warranty is for.
Good luck.

I would be curious to know if this is related to a specific paint color. Does anyone know? Our V70 is blue/green and has shown no signs of paint problems at this time.

Same here. V70AWD, blue-green, no peeling noted yet, but I hate those little scratches...!

Douglas,
The Blue/Green clear coat metallic has the best gloss of any finish around; unfortunately, that dark color will show even the finest scratches. Here's a couple of common sense rules that I follow - -
Try not to touch the paint when the car is dirty - dirt is like sandpaper.
Wash as often as reasonable; do it yourself with a good quality carwash.
KEEP YOUR WASHING IMPLEMENTS (mits, sponges, whatever) VERY, VERY, VERY CLEAN! Dirt scratches, so does salt.
Use lots of water, don't smear the dirt around.
Dry the car with an old bath towel (clean) and follow up with one of those detailing sprays like "Slickstuff" or Meguires "detailer" this stuff does a good job of preventing the dirt from sticking, not to mention a great shine.
Have Fun,
Chessie
