850 Turbo Chip[ALL/1998] posted by Bill on

So far, I have identified 3 sources of engine control upgrade chips for
my '95 850 Turbo. I can't seem to get a straight answer regarding the
differences. If anyone has any experience with the options, I would
value their option.
IPD/TME - $1,000 Denies the existance of Superchips
Superchips - $395. Says their are the same as TME
Group 6 - $750. ?

I think you should first check out TME's site http://www.tme.se. The site clearly explain what kind of modification and specification of their ECU upgrade. TME(IPD) is the only one so far that has clearly list out their spec. of the ECU upgrade, but generally, Group 6 and BSR sportsman's ECU upgrade are pretty much the same principal of the TME(IPD) ECU. The difference among these ECUs are mainly the max. boost, and how long the turbo run at full boost under full throttle etc. But so far I've haven't seen the exact spec of either the Group 6 or the BSR sportsman ECUs. The Superchip is a different story, Superchip does not reprogram the whole ECU, they just change the chip inside the ECU, which is more similiar with the Dinan or Autothority Chips for BMWs. Therefore, the Superchip is not a well rounded package compare to the other ones.
OK, here is the summary of the spec I know about the different ECUs.
IPD/TME 270hp@5600rpm, 261ft.Ib torque, 13.3Ib boost(and runs longer than stock), 1st gear torque restrictor removed, lower boost during shifting.
Group 6 270hp, ? max boost (runs as long as the accelerator is pressed) cuts 0-60 time by 1.6 sec. http://www.group-6.com
BSR sportsman - different spec ranging from 260hp to 305hp. Actually, Stefan at BSR can built the ECU you want! (But I forgot his website address, check the brickboard link).
Superchip -- I asked Scott Hart at IPD and he told me that they don't know if they exist because he tried to buy one from them to do a back to back comparison with the IPD chip, but somehow he had no success in getting one.

I second Terrence's comments. But would add that you can safely add about 10 units to each of the IPD/TME numbers quoted for HP and Torque by combining the ECU with the Sport Exhaust which really should be installed with it. In addition, the IPD unit is the most thoroughly tested, backed, and supported of them all. When doing something as serious as replacing the brains of your car, price really should be a secondary factor to quality and reliablilty, and for that, the IPD/TME unit cant be beat.
