I posted a query last September 24 about my temp gauge spiking. It finally got tracked down to a sticky thermostat (moral: go to the basics first; check to see if the appliance is plugged in!). The original symptom was the temp gauge spiking to near the red zone, staying there for about a minute, and then quickly settling down to normal (this was on a '92 245). Shatz was dead on in suspecting the thermostat; no, it wasn't a whacky suggestion!

FYI, possible suggestions for problems/solutions were as follows:

1. Check the wire coming from the temp engine sensor (from Stoney); this turned out to be kinda OK visually, but the wiring harness itself could have been bad. Had it been the wiring harness, the alternatives would have been to kludge the connection to the temp sensor, or replace the entire harness (the dealer option, at beaucoup bucks; $500-700)

2. Bad temp engine sensor (dealer suggestion); ~$35 to replace

3. Loose screw/bolt holding the gauge to the speedo cluster (Stoney again), or bad gauge itself (needs to be checked with a meter)

4. Bad/poor connection or faulty temp. comp. board inside the instrument cluster (Abe's suggestion). Turned out the dealer had replaced this awhile back, but it never solved the problem.
