122S SU Carbs /any good mechanics in L.A.?[ALL/1998] posted by D. Byrnes on

My 1965 Amazon's carbs are pouring fuel. Two days ago, it was drivable, but no more: we pushed it to a local mechanic, who I think is lazy when he tells me to just buy the conversion. No way! I'll be indebted to anybody who can recommend any shops or mechanics in Los Angeles who have a magical touch with 122S, or are even just schooled in the art of SU carbs. Thanks!

They need to be rebuilt - the throttle shafts holes in the body are likely worn, seals gone, etc.

Send them to: Tom Bryant, PE, 272 New Meadows Road, West Bath, ME 04530, (207) 443-6338 (eves). He will bore and re-bush the bodies, rebuild with new seals, etc. He has custom teflon seals for type H SUs. Complete rebuilds ~$130/pair including new shafts and bushes, seals, main jets and needles, float valves and return ship. Best deal I know of.

Alternative is Carriage Motors, Middle Street, Box 185, Wiscasset, ME 04578, (207) 882-5033. They charge $250/pr for complete rebuild and include some additional new parts like new screws, etc. as well as glass bead the bodies to make them look like new.

On West coast, Ray Schmeller does them for $299/pr. In Spokane, WA (509) 928-7953

Oh, come on, Byrnes, SU's are not that difficult to fix. Pouring fuel is usually due to needle-and-seat assemblies that need replacing. Buy a pair of Grose-Jets from IPD (1-800-444-6473), part #CH2S0301, and install them yourself following IPD's instructions and using the Haynes manual for backup. Total cost is less than dinner at a good restaurant.

If you're completely inept mechanically and don't even own a flat screwdriver, you might try contacting the West Coast Volvo 1800 club. Someone there is bound to take pity on you or at least send you to a mechanic who knows how simple SU's really are. Bill Webb might be the best first contact. He's in Bakersfield at (805) 588-1832. -Glenn.

If ya have the old type SUs with the float chamber off to the side the job takes all of 10 minutes. Take off the 3 screws holding the top of the float chamber. Carefully pry off the top so as not to damage the gasket. Remove the float by pushing pin holding it in place. Unscrew the needle valve which is activated by the float tongue. Reassmble in reverse order.

I have not had good luck with the IPD jets(really needle and seat to control inflow) and the new plastic floats because they are not really adjustable, at least not for me. If the carbs are otherwise in good shape they might work
So oten the throttle shaft bushes are worn, etc. I intend to try a pair on the guy who is doing the $130 rebuilds. I like these carbs as their adjstable main jets help compensate for less potent fuel some.
