Ouch! Expensive! The manual for my other car, a maxima, was only $60 and it's the whole car, right down to the computer codes and torque specifications. Same manual that the dealer uses. I was looking for the manual for the V70 because I want to upgrade the stereo and alarm. I assume the manual would show me where the brains are, what the wire codes are, how to remove parts of the dash, etc. Eventually when the car is out of warranty, I would start doing my own maintenance/repairs. It seems like with a volvo, all the necessary manuals for car maintenance can add up to $500!. This is just as stupid as the lack of an adjustable wiper delay. I was actually cursing at them the other night.

Yes.. You're correct... and all that goes with it. Also, I agree with you re:prices. Just passing along the information as another resource to those persons occasionally forced to attend the court of last resort; like me - I want an original owners manual to my Bertone. Everything I've seen so far has been dog chewed and water stained. I will resort, if necessary to a single source point of purchase in order to get what's needed, rather than not at all.

I have to agree with you. I replaced a '87 maxima with a V70 and it's sometimes very difficult to deal with Volvo's lack of willingness (or ability) to provide affordable and competent aftermarket care of their product. Our V70 has already been in the shop for several minor problems that I would have associated with an american made vehicle, and the service has been very poor if not incompetent. Our Maxima was in the shop once over a 10 year period and was still running great at 150K miles when it was sold.

Someone posted a message a few months ago suggesting that the higher price you pay for a Volvo gives you a higher level of customer service. I wish it were true. I get superb service for my '97 Dodge Ram, but choose a V70 over a Dodge minivan for obvious reasons of safety. I feel confident that I made the right choice for safety, but I am very disappointed in the quality and service from Volvo. I've been pleasantly surprised at the higher level of service I get from Dodge and the vehicle was over $10K less than the V70. Turns out the Dodge service manager is a former Volvo owner. Given the chance to do it over I would probably go with another Maxima or possibly a Camry. Even though their crash test ratings are poorer than Volvo, the difference in my blood pressure from dealing with Volvo would probably compensate for the difference.

Anyway, I would suggest the wiper delay relay from IPD ($68). Pricey , but it's simple to install and works well. The lack of variable wiper delay, no keylock on the passenger door, and lack of protective covering on the top of the rear bumper were all oversights, but I guess you've got to take a little bad with the good. I enjoy driving the V70 (non turbo - wish it had the Maxima V6) and realize that it's a lot more car with respect to safety than other cars that we've owned.

Please forgive me for flaming Volvo so heavily. I would like nothing better than to be exhilerated with joy over the purchase of this car but at this time it is just not so. It's tough to deal with customer service replies like "it could be worse", "what's wrong, there's no charge", or "bring it back in a about a week and we'll have the parts (light bulb-no joke)", when you've spent over $30K for their product .

I really appreciate you guys that support the bickboard and see that you are obviously happy with your Volvo's, as I would very much like to be. I think a good start would be a decent dealership or garage in the piedmont area of N.C.. Any recommendations? Again, please don't take offense to my comments. I sincerely like the car overall, but I am quite frustrated with the aftermarket/service end.

I'm almost the same situation as you. I have an 89 maxima but I am keeping it since it is simply the best car I have ever owned. Took it to the dealer once during it's warranty period. I now have 170,000 miles on it. Even though the volvo is supposedly a better car, it won't get that title from me unless it's as reliable as the maxima. Before I bought the shop manual for my maxima, I was always paying someone to do the repairs. After buying it and seeing how detailed it was, I finally gave it a major overhaul last summer with the help of my brother-in-law. We changed the clutch, timing belt, and just about every other piece of rubber I could find on the front, and it really drives like new now. For what I saved in labor, I now have a lot of neat tools. Having learned all this (plus having the tools), I would do the same for the volvo when the time comes. Of course, thanks to volvo, now I'll need a wheel-barrow to take all the manuals down to the car. I only have 600 miles on my V70T5 so I have no idea what the service experience will be like. Fortunately, this forum is around and I'm also happy with this forum. So far, the car is incredible except for the exact same things you mentioned (except for the key-lock, that's why I have the remote). I'm making some kind of flap for the tailgate so that I can just throw it out everytime I load something into the back.

Pat,

I also have keyless remote, but I like to put keys in my pocket which is not good for a keyless remote that will unlock doors from a long distance. After finding my doors unlocked when I was sure I had locked them I decided to enable the rear flashers so that I could see the lights flash when the locks were enabled. In general, I no longer carry the remote. I guess the remotes are designed to operate from a long distance for the emergency alarm system.

My car had the flashers enabled on lock by default. I didn't know this was an option. Just out of curiousity, how did you change the setting? Can I enable the flashing on unlock also? I have also experienced that accidental unlocking with the maxima's remote and if anything the volvo's remote is even more sensitive but it hasn't happened yet. That's why I'd like the lights to flash upon unlocking also. The manual states that extras can be added to the alarm like glass and incline sensors. Do you know anything about this?

The manual also states that after locking the car, if only the driver's door is unlocked but never opened, the alarm relocks and activates after two minutes. Hmmm. Think I'll need to check this out.

Pat,

Our V70 is a GTAS, which was not suppose to come with the
keyless remote/alarm system combination, just keyless remote (per our
dealership). When I showed them that the Volvo brochures clearly state
the keyless/alarm combination as standard equipment they agreed to install
it free of charge. During the installation (2 trips) they gave us some options for operation of the flashers.
Anyway, here is how it works:

Press remote door lock and all 5 lock with 1 flash from the flashers.
Press remote door lock once and the drivers door unlocks with 2 flashes from the
flashers.
Press remote door lock again and the remaining 4 doors unlock but no flashers.
If all 5 doors are locked and you press remote to unlock the rear hatch, 2 flashes
occur from the flashers but subsequent presses to unlock the remaining doors
does not turn on the flashers.

To accomplish this the dealer has to enter an option code for the alarm
system. I don't think it's something you can do yourself.

Good luck and enjoy!

My remote is different. I specifically have a lock, unlock, and hatch button. Pressing the unlock once, unlocks the drivers. Second time unlocks all the doors. I'll ask the dealer about my alarm options because I really want the lights upon unlocking. If you don't mind me asking, what were the reasons you had to take your car into the dealer for?

Pat,
My remote also has lock, unlock, and hatch buttons, but also has a red alarm
button. Sorry if my description of its operation was confusing, but I think it
operates the same as yours. Our V70 was serviced for the following defects:

Missing alarm system, faulty turn signal (socket was rusted badly), air leaks around front
door handles, bad rattle in front during acceleration, broken door lock,
leaky rear window washer, backlight for sunroof switch didn't work.

The defects are minor, it's dealing with the dealership that makes me so angry.

Yes, I have the same remote and based on someone elses message, am going to ask the dealer to turn the flash on for unlocking. About the air leaks around the front door. Wow! It's 14 degrees out today and while I was driving, your're right, the air really flows through that door handle. Was exactly did they fix/replace and how long does it take? Do they have to remove the whole door panel?. I'm worried about having them take something apart that's brand new. Reminds me of my friends lexus es300. When he got up to speed, a little piece of fabric that was velcroed down inside each door handle would fly out of the door and end up in the back seat due to air leaks in the door. He eventually lost them while driving with the window down as they flew out!

There is a tech bulletin regarding the air leaks around the door handles.
I'm assuming they installed a gasket or something, but whatever they did
made a big difference. They did remove my door panels for the repair
(3 panels were removed including repairing the rear door lock). The panels were not
damaged but they now have a 1/4" wide gray streak around their outer edge from what I'm assuming
was a dirty panel removing tool. Air still comes in when the sunroof is open but
I figure that's OK.

KB,
Your dealer can do what you are asking for. It does require special equipment but will only take a few minutes to program it the way you want it. They will probably do this for you as a courtesy at no charge. Adding additional features would of course require more mula.

I just went to the dealer and they told me it's one or the other but not both. That is, the lights either flash for the lock OR the unlock. Is this correct? If so, I'm tempted to run a wire from the lock/unlock outputs of the brain (if I can figure them out) through my set of relay/diodes and then into the parking lights.

Pat,

I double checked our V70 and I can assure you that they can be set to flash once
when locked and twice when unlocked.

The newest Ipd catalog offers a British service manual for 850s at a very reasonable price; they also now sell an adjustable wiper relay for about $60. Check their homepage. I installed the adjustabel wiper relay and it works fine except that it is a bit noisy.

Good luck!

How noisy is it? Is it enough to annoy while driving if say the stereo was off? After reading the IPD description, it seems like a lot of steps to change the delay interval, although right now I would probably deal with. Have yet to drive in the rain without cursing at my wipers. Since, the IPD relay is just a simple swap to add adjustable, I'm thinking of just building my own relay with a knob extended to some easy location that would vary the delay. Now I just need to find my books on electronics and see how easy/difficult that would be.

Dear Pat:

The noise is similar to that of the turn signal but much less noticeable. I have to concentrate to hear it, and it is not annoying, but certainly is something different from original equipment (which I never noticed).

Good luck!
