142 Crankase ventilation[ALL/1998] posted by irv klein on

Over the years I have owned 122s and 142s. The crankase ventilation hosing arrangement is different in the two cars and i always wanted to know why. In the 122 the crankase gasses are evacuated from the sump through the intake manifold while fresh air comes from the air filter into the valve cover. On the 145 its just the opposite. The gasses are evacuated from the valve cover into the intake manifold while the fresh air comes from the air filter into the sump. Anyone out there know why Volvo changed the hosing for the 145s. Personally I always liked the 122 setup and rerouted my 145 hoses the same way.

In early '70s it became a law to have 100% "closed crankcase re-circulation". How air actually circulates, is everybody's guess...Volvo B18-20-30s seem to push air out of both!
