Junkyard Dog[ALL/1998] posted by Lee Lowrey on

I'm a die-hard junkyard scrounger for bits and pieces needed for the many Volvos I've owned over the years -- mostly 2-series cars. We just moved to the Upstate of South Carolina and I was wondering if anyone on the 'board knows of any "salvage yards" with Volvos in the area? I wouldn't want to drive too far for the minor items I get in used condition. (I need a manual driver's-side mirror and door edge guard for my wife's 740 and mirror motors for my 960 -- my eldest son has whacked immovable objects too many times!)

Anyone reading this that lives in eastern Kansas or western Missouri and wants a great source of 2-series junkers (can't seem to find 7-series cars in junkyards yet), please visit my old stomping grounds, U-Wrench-It in Kansas City (I-435 at Truman Road). For a $1 entry fee, you can cruise a clean (for a junkyard), well-organized yard with extremely good prices (prices for parts are posted on the wall!). For example, brake calipers are $25 and transmissions are $35 (!) with exhange. The guys at the desk usually don't charge for minor trim items like sunvisor clips and the colored plastic "screws" Volvo uses all over their cars if your buying something big. They never had a Volvo newer than an '84 model in their yard, though.

Have a safe and enjoyable New Year's!

On the subject of junkyards, U-Pull-It in Ft. Lauderdale has similar pricing and has a decent representation of 240's. I saw a PV-something there once and an early 142. Don't bother calling though they don't seem to know what's in the yard!

Thanks, Chris. Next time I'm in Daytona for our routine "sand-between-the-toes" fix, my FL brother-in-law (he owns a 242) and I will drive down to Lauderdale for some junkyard cruising.

If you want to drive as far as Atlanta-there are two Volvo only yards in
town. Voluparts on Trabert Ave. ph. 404-352-3402. and Auto Dissassembly
930 Chattahoochee Ave . (they are within one mile of each other so one
trip could hit both easily.)Auto Disassembly - ph. 1-800-351-9964- these
guys are Iranian and love to haggle-best prices.

Thanks, Mike. I go to Corvair conventions/swap meets with my LA (Lower Alabama) brother-in-law on a regular basis (and he owns an '88 740), so we will both take some extra time in Hot-lanta next time we're in town to visit the 'yards you recommended.

Sounds like Mike Jordan has a couple of good yards for you. The following web-site lists Volvo yards but I didn't see anything closer than Atlanta. But a good reference nonetheless.

Thnks, Bob. Looks like a web site of another doctor with a Volvo... I'll surf over and take a look.
