Broken upper steering column in 245[ALL/1998] posted by Keith Hyndes on

My 1980 245 has recently broken the outer casing on the upper steering column. This causes the steering wheel to have about 3/4 of an inch of slop/play (up and down). The car was like this when I bought it 2 years ago (I replaced it with a S/H unit). It has broken through the area with a pressed in pattern, a few inches from the top. Questions? Do these fail often (or am I unlucky)? Is it feasible to repair by welding? What is the purpose of the pressed in area; A. is there a bearing against it ,B. safety ie. deliberate weak point thatt will break if you are unlucky enough to bash your head on the steering wheel?
