Rear Window Defroster Repair?[ALL/1998] posted by Howard Berman on

I have an 84 Diesel wagon. The rear window defroster has seen better days, only one wire left. When I turn it on only one wire defrosts. You used to be able to get a repair kit for this. Still available?? Is it worth the work or just get a new(or checked out used) window.

Used is a good way to go. About $60-70. Call Damron European 1.800.541.3011 They'll expect their money first or COD since glass is fragile but they do pack it well.

There are repair kits available, but they are somewhat tedious to use and would be a real job if you are talking about more than just a few breaks in the wire (sounds like you may be).

Let me tell you there is nothing like a new rear window after suffering through a faulty defroster! I'd say go for it. The used is good, but you could also be faced with the same problem sooner or later.

Sometimes you can get your insurance company to pay for the amount over your deductable. The first one I replaced was due to a vandal or mischievious teenager who decided to put a rock through the rear window. No problem with that one. My most recent one was the 960 I now drive. I had loaded the back with a lot of my daughter's household stuff and argued that a load shift may have scraped and damaged the wiring, which is exposed on the Volvo.

Most insurance companies know that it is safer to have an operational defroster than a faulty one. Obviously yours has been damaged rather than simply worn out...they don't actually wear out, do they?
