244 STILL starting badly (though not as often)[ALL/1998] posted by Owen Woodland on

My 1976 b21e powered 244 dl is still starting badly on occasion. There doesn't seem to be any way to pick it, but it seems that it happens most often when I run the car for 20 minutes or so (to work), leave it for 10 or so minutes and then try to run it again... I get the same atrocious idle until the car is revved a bit and the (?excess fuel in the engine?) gets through. So far:
* replaced 3 of 4 injectors (with s/h but still ok)
* replaced cold start injector (solved fuel leak)
* replaced air mass meter thingy unit (to get the CO setting back again)

The car idles ok now (although that's gone downhill, too, about a week after the car was fixed), certainly better than before. It feels as if there is an excess of fuel in the engine (from leaks), BUT

tested the injectors today (all of them, including cold start injector) - no leaks! (after about an hour of being left, so that discounts the ten minute problem).

When the car is hard to start, it will often smell, occasionally strongly of petrol (you may recall my previous stream on this subject, and it didn't turn out to be the fuel I was carrying in the trunk). The smell is inside the car, not obviously outside.

The car is also occasionally hard to start after being left overnight, most often when the day is warm.

Usually the car will start fine... it may be relevant that it seems to give itself a little "rev" as high as 2000 when the engine kicks over, only for a quick second or so until it drops back to regular idle....

I'm really stumped on this one, and if I take it back to the mechanic, all he is going to suggest is a new set of injectors, which it would seem it does not need.

Help please!

Owen. Perhaps the mixture is off. Too rich after replacing the seals? Try resetting the idle valve or perhaps the air control assembly needs tweeking. Is the FI relay making excessive noise because this mechanic device may not be bang-on? Just guessing.

Owen. The burst up to 2000 revs or so is from the cold start injector squirting fuel. It is controlled by the thermo-time switch. If the engine is fairly warm, the CSI will not fire. If this is faulty it will affect starting, but not idling. Check your Auxillary Air Valve (AAV), if you haven't already. They can get stuck shut. They have a variable (depending on temp) orifice that allows the correct amount of air to bypass the throttle plate, so the car will idle. Remove it's hoses, and it should be partly open (with engine cold_cold)( It won't be fully open in Melbourne Summer). If need be, remove it (easy) and put it in the freezer, it should open up. If not you can clean it with petrol or "carb-cleaner" (he-he). Failing that the AAV costs about $50 S/H or $149 new. Also check thermostat in airbox. These go bad. It should be allowing only the cold air intake. Good luck- keep up the persistance.

Keith....

Thanks for the response..

Just a quick question about that last part of the message...
What do you mean by the "thermostat in the airbox"? Is there a more technical name for what you are talking about? Am I just ignorant? (probably the latter!!)

Also, (whistle), not a bad effort on your 240!! 420,000 eh? And I thought I was going well!!

Thanks all for the responses,

There are 2 pipes that run to the airbox, a short fat tuned one (cold air), and a long silver pipe that picks hot air off the outside of the exhaust pipe. A thermostat in the airbox grows and shrinks with temperature change to move a flap to select the appropriate intake.

It sounds alot as if you are having problems with the check valve,
which should hold some pressure in your fuel system.
If this valve is bad then, after you turn of the car, all the fuel runs back
into the tank and it takes a long time for the car to start.
If it is hot and this valve is not operating normal then air bubbles can
build up within your fuel system.
Just conect some fuelpressure gauges, let the car run check the pressure
and then turn it of. If the pressure trops town to zero within abaut 20 min
then you know where your problem is.
