Can anyone validate the reliability of these 6cyl cars? I know volvos earlier 6s were high maintanence. I'd prefer a 4cyl turbo, but came across a nice 6. Any advice before I make the deal?

I would advise against buying a V-6. Period.

It really depends. Yes, the V6 has a bad rap on the Volvo lists. Mine (B28F) has 172K miles and still going strong. There are a lot of other engines that would love to make it to 150K miles.
So what does it depend on? 1990? Without pulling any books out, this has to be about the last year of the "B280F" in a Volvo. Are we talking a USA car?
It depends on maintenance and price. The B280F was the latest version on the PRV co-op engine that Volvo used. The fuel injection, induction, and heads were much improved over the B28F. The worst part and what gained the hatred for this motor is the dreaded B27F - and in particular the head oiling and soft cam shafts - a recipe for disaster. To make maters worse the bloody French PR team (sorry :-0 ), with Volvo along for the ride, did almost exactly the same thing on the early B28F. There is even a service bulletin on cleaning the head and oil passages. Still even in the B280F the potential (although minimized) is there.
One more major thing: This all aluminun engine (with iron sleeves) is a sandwich bolted together and if mine goes "four legs towards God", I will not be opening it up.
After spilling my insides: If the price is low, and the maintenance was good, I would go for it!
Now....if the car is a diesel 6.........

Yes - it comes down to maintenance. In America you still hear old ladies bragging how many "hundred-of-thousands-of miles" their old Chevy got before the FIRST oil change... This V6 engine had 6mm (1/4") oil passage to the heads. If you don't change oil regulary it gets clogged and the cams & rockers go South in hurry. Before you get this car, check the cams & rockers for wear first. Then, if you buy it, install an oil pressure gauge from the head. This way you can monitor oil pressure to the head. It'll be a cheap, early warning. In Europe these engines are working good. They get regular maintenance and care. Peugeot has very good carb set-up, too. It bolts to Volvo engine as well. It uses two carbs; One small and one bigger, giving very good power and milage. V6 cars usually cost $ 2-3000 less than Turbos due to poor re-sale value. Good Luck!

Don't take it even if it's free. The PRV v-6 makes a very nice boat anchor.
Save yourself a ton of trouble and stick with real Volvo motors.

I would stay away from the PRV V-6 -- any year. I had nothing but trouble with our '79 264 and have talked to too many Volvo mechanics that hate working on them. However, the new Volvo straight six (2.9-litre B6304F) is a real sweet engine. I've never heard anything bad about the B6304F from any of the Volvo mechanics I've queried and have had almost 70k of trouble-free miles on my '94 960. The cam belt has to be changed every 50k miles, though! Twice the milage of my wife's '89 740. Don't think any engine ever made is as good as Volvo's 4-cylinder for durability...

I think the Volvo V6 engine is wonderful. It is what inspired me to write a book on how to install a Chevrolet engine into the Volvo after the V6 dies. The 6-cylinder diesel engine is just as wonderful--they don't last very long either.

There is honestly a guy at my local dealership that has one with well over 500000 miles(I swear) he's done nothing but 5,000 mile changes. This is the honest truth, however I would still stick with a Volvo engine.
