engine temperature and turbos[ALL/1998] posted by linda sprague on

I purchased a 765 1988 turbo SW last week.
I,ve noticed the engine runs hot (compared to my 240).
Also since I picked it up it used up about a third of a bottle of
antifreeze.
Is this a leak?
Do these turbos require special attention to the fluid levels?
What shoul I look out for?
I've met more cooperative dealers.
Thanks,
LS

Hi Linda
Check the engine for leaks....any waters leaking from the tubes? Check also the oil top...if its grey under, you have a leak in the engine...hope not..
And the engine should not run hot....
Please comment..

Turbos should NOT run hotter than any other Volvo. Check for leaks around the water pump and the head. If you see white stripes it means a leak. What Svain means is check the oil filler cap inside. If you see white foam, that can mean bad head gasket. Coolant's leaking to the engine inside. It can be defective trermostat, too. I'd go back to the dealer who sold the car and ask ALL these to be checked and give the answer in writing. If there's an expensive problem later you can give your car back or get the work done free. Turbo engine repair is expensive ! Good luck!

Check all water hose connections to and from the water jacket around the turbo.
When I had mine rebuilt the clamps were not tightened and when I would accelerate the increase in pressure would cause a small stream of water to flow out. It would evaporiate on the hot turbo so the level would go down with no outward signs of a leak.
Also mine ran hot, changed thermostat, fan clutch, and added IPD three core radiator. In Fla. you need extra cooling if you want the A/C to work.
Hope this helps.
