i am working with local dealer on trading my 1993 940 turbo for the new C70 coupe. dealer is suggesting what seems to be a very low trade value for existing car. would appreciate any advise on realistic trade and retail value. vehicle is fully loaded, including cd exchanger in trunk. 75,000 miles and in truly excellent condition. maintenance schedule on vehicle complete. appreciate any ideas.

In my experience i found that the dealers are only willing to give you far less than the actual market value of the vehicle and i guess thats 'business'. To get some realistic value of a vehicle there is the 'blue book' but that is accessible to those in the industry. I have a few friends in the car biz but still had no luck. The next step is to research the red book and the gold book which, are available at most libraries, these books give a fairly good idea of market value. If one is seriously interested in getting the best return on your Volvo,I'd recommend selling it privately tho` somewhat more hassle. There`s always a demand for good used Volvo`s as the dealers are well aware . Best of the season!

If I were you, I'd just sell the car on the open market, and then use the difference in profit to purchase the C70. You'd get more for your $, unless this dealer is willing to REALLY cut you a good deal!

One thing to keep in mind is most places in the US have sales taxes
on car sales, but the tax is figured as (sale price) - (trade in) =
taxable amount. If you're buying a 40k car, trading in a 15k car,
you'll save $1200 in sales tax. This might make it worth trading
rather than selling it yourself.. also, your financing may require
a large amount down, for which many people use their trade in.
If I were buying a new Volvo, I'd check with Auto-By-Tel and
Volvo's Overseas Delivery program to get the best prices.. Dealers
scare me.
Good luck,

David,
You can get a good idea of wholesale and retail values for your car at www.edmunds.com. There is also a site for the blue book people but I can never remember their URL. I've always found edmunds pretty close.
Remember the dealer is in the business of buying at wholesale and selling at retail. You almost always do better selling the car yourself but of course with much more hassle with ads, dealing with various and sundry people who think you should be selling below wholesale etc.etc.. Depends on your tolerance for pain vs your utility of money curve.

Kelly Blue Book is: www.kbb.com/ Do they really have a Coupe to give you? In LA area they're selling cars but don't have any !! Also, I'd test drive a Mercedes CLK, too. What a beautifull car.... And it is NOT built by punch of private mechanics in England, either..TWR can build very good race cars but street cars are not the same thing. I don't have much faith for Englinsh workmanship. Just look at what they did for an Acura ! They took perfect parts and turned them into a STERLING - ther biggest junk on the road ! I like Volvo Coupe, and hope it doesn't become an other BERTONE... Sell your 940 here! Place a FREE ad on Brickboard Classified. 940 is the last real Volvo....Should sell FAST ! PS. Let us know how you like your Coupe !

Now is not a good time to purchase a C70. Due to serious quality control and production problems at the new plant, far fewer C70s were produced than planned, and fewer still were shipped to US dealers (around 700 I think). As a result, most dealers received 1 or none cars, and those dealers that have one are charging up to $5K over list for these first cars. That is one heck of a premium to be the first on your block!
I suspect that the dealer is willing to give far lower trade value on the C70 deal that he would on one of the other models that is more plentiful - say the V70R AWD model.
