Mag wheels on a P1800[ALL/1998] posted by Chris A. on

What is the maximum width for a 15" wheel on my '70 P1800? I'd like a wider rim front and back, without any rubbing at the extremes of the turning circle. Also, is there an equivalent bolt circle for this car, such as Mercedes, Audi, etc. It sure would make it easier to interpret the wheel catalogs.

I recently replaced the 15" wheels on my daughter's 164 with standard steel wheels off of a 240 series car. They fit perfectly without modification and there was no fouling of brakes or suspension parts. The tire size that I used was 195 / 70 14. With this in mind I certainly would expect that you could install just about any 14" alloy wheel that was advertised as acceptable for the 240 series, including the five spoke factory alloys that came on the GLT cars in the early 80's, or Panasport clones. I would probably have a stroke if I had an 1800 or 1800ES in red with dull aluminum colored Panasports! Try to befriend someone who has a 240 series car with alloys similar to ones that you might like to install on your 1800 and bribe or con them into letting you take the wheels and tires off of their car for just a few minutes to see if they will fit.

The widest stock wheels fitted to an 1800 were the 5-1/2-inchers on '72 and '73 models. Try before you buy! -Glenn.

Hello Chris,
I think a P1800 can use the same rim width as an 122,
I have seen some 122s with 7*15 rims (rims where made for old mustangs).
Of course the width of the rim tells nothing if you don't have the ET (offset)
of the fitting flange.
Those 7 inch wide rims will wear your wheels bearings much faster then the
stock 5.5 'rims.
The max tire width for a stock 5.5 inch rim is 205mm.
Regards.

The bolt circle on a '70 1800E[not a P1800 or an 1800S] is 5 on 108mm. The only[non-Volvo] equivalent is late Ford[T'Bird]. 140 or 240 wheels will fit.
If it's an 1800S or a P1800[pre -'70] the bolt circle is 5 on 4.5", same as earlier Ford, Chrysler, AMC, etc., but the offset will be iffy.

hello jim,
was wondering if you knew the correct offset for pre '70 1800 cars.
or how the offset can be determined.
does the width of the rim have anything to do with the offset?
thanks,
george

Actually, I'm not too sure about '68 and '69[I've had '66 and '70 1800s].
I'd say the offset should be about 1"[25mm]; stock is 25mm for the earlier ones, I think.
Offset has nothing to do with rim width, it's measured from the center of the rim. A 6" wide rim would measure about 4" from the inside to the mounting surface for a +1" offset.
Most Ford, etc. rims have about 1/2" offset.

I have an 1800ES with the Volvo five spoke turbo wheels (15x6). The 195/60 tires just barely rub on the stabilizer bar. When on the rack, the steering locks just before contact, so the rubbing is probably only when I do a quick u-turn and apply additional pressure to the steering components. I have a spare in the garage, and could probably measure the offset if you're interested. If you go looking for Ford wheels, you'll need these numbers.
