1987 245DL. I'm going to replace the front control arms bushings on my 1987 245DL. I would like to be able to roll the vehicle (tires will be on) in and out of my garage as I work on it. Does anyone see this as a problem? I don't want to damage anything. Happy Holidays .. Mr. Tool 12/24/97

Hi Mr Tool !
If you take of the control arms, the wheels are only fasten to the top of the ...shockab. ...Right..? If you try moving the car like this it will colapse.....

Dont move the car before you are finished with the job....

Svein...If I physically connect the lower ball joint back to the point where the control arm pivots with a peice of steel. Would this work?. I would measure the existing control arm to get the correct distance, then bolt on this temporary piece. This method would fuction as temporary control arm, thus eliminating the problem yoiu describe? Comments Please ... Mr. Tool

Are you sure you need to replace smaller bushings? They hardly never go bad, only the rear, bigger ones. The smaller ones are very hard to replace without 10-ton press & tools(Well - you MUST have tools - your name ...)The rear ones are very easy to knock out and knock in. No need to play Russian roulette with your life...Buy TWO hard bushings, same to LH/RH.

I hesitated in responding to your post because I thought that it was pretty obvious that a ton of folks out there would tell you that it is just not possible to disassemble your car to the point that you describe and still be able to roll it around on its wheels. They did, but no one pointed out that there is a very easy option in moving the car even with the suspension completely removed. I was in the high line euopean automobile service business in North Carolina and in Tallahassee, Florida for over 25 years and I loged many miles over that time moving cars into and out of the shop with the front ends poised on floor jacks. Of course the garage floor and the garage apron must be of substantial material, asphalt or concrete, and you must be careful. Lift that car with a floor jack centered under the front cross member. Make sure that the path that the jack will take is not obstructed by ANYTHING. Even very small stones or nuts/washers are hard for the small steel wheels of the jack to negotiate. During the move lower the jack to the lowest point that will allow clearance of any floor irregularities and use a jack with the largest contact plate that you can find. Move the care very slowly so that any unexpected obstruction does not cause the cross member to slip position on the jack. It is
best to have at least two people making the effort. One to both "drive" the jack and the other to do the rest of the pushing. While "at rest" be sure to use good jack stands. Those little spindley tripod things can get you maimed or killed. G out and buy at least a pair of the good ones with cast posts and welded steel four leg bases.

No -it will not be going anywhere. First you will remove the front wheels and once you remove the bolts through the front bushing, the bolts attaching the rear busching , the ball joints and links - the A frame will be sitting on the ground and the wheel hub will be unsupported.
