Diesel vacuum?[ALL/1998] posted by Howard Berman on

I have an 84 240 Diesel wagon. I think I am having a problem with the vacuum pump. When I first fire it up in the morning the brakes are hard and the vents do not seem to be working right. After a few minutes all is well. Is the pump something that is rebuildable?

Your vacuum pump should be repairable. It will have a diaphram and 2 check valves, if it is similar to VW Jetta. You could connect a vacuum guage temporarly by inserting a tee in a small vacuum line. The vacuum should come up within a few seconds of starting. I can check my diesel vacuum numbers if you like.

Don't forget to check all those vacuum lines for cracking. That Diesel is a VW so don't be afraid to salvage VW parts. Valve shims vacuum pump etc. VW diesels are a bit more plentiful. Don't expect VW to support you though... they know nothing about this engine.
