Alarms and starters[ALL/1998] posted by Jebreh M. Baker on

I have an aftermarket alarm with cutoff module, When I first got the alarm, I never experienced any hotstart problems. It is now winter, and I am. I am wondering if the alarm is indeed the culprit. I had the starter replaced and once in place, it wouldn't engage! The old one is back on the car, functioning, just grinding a bit. Also, if I do install an additional relay, Will I still retain my starter kill function? Thanks,

What brand name alarm system is it? Who makes it? And Who installed it?
Most aftermarket alarms do have some relays located with the alarm unit!
On the 2 volvos I have the Code-a-alarm system on them. I even at times I
find that I have problems with them. They work great for 1 year and then they start having problems. By this I mean the alarm cannot be activated with the remote. Mind you that even in valet mode the alarm system drains a lot of power from the battery. This will drain the battery. Dos your alarm system have a start kill function built into the system? If it does it may be at fault!
on my units they have this function. I'm thinking that the next alarm system I get will be a DEI "VIPER" system. As to who wired the system for you, majority of the time they don't wire the unit in correctly! See article on Consumers Report on alarms.

I installed a generic starter cut off relay this spring and havent had too many problems with it.

I spliced into the Pink wire (terminal #30) from the key switch and put the trigger switch near the front seat. I chose not to install the LED idiot lite and relay on my ears to locate the "click' of the relay. The valet switch is disguised as one of the many dash switches-I used a std. Volvo switch-and I've had several occasions where a Garage or Service place has called me to ask "What do we have to do to start the car?".

In terms of Alarms-Viper is the best I've seen so far. If you need more feedback try rec.audio.car where lots of installers hang out.

I have DEI units in all of my cars and with the exception of falsing on the alarm sensors I have never had any problems. I think the ones I have had are sensitivity problems. All three units I have are remote start units with alarm. A friend of mine that installs them actually said they have had even better luck with another brand.
