'90 740T Wagon sick?[ALL/1998] posted by Steve on

I bought a '90 740T wagon from a dealer in June, who claimed that it had just had both its 50k and 60k maintenance (it has 68k miles on it now). Questions:

1. I get 16.5 mpg around town (I'm not particularly heavy-footed) and about 24 mpg on the highway...is this unusually low?

2. I lose about 1 1/4 quarts of oil per oil change (3-5000 miles, depending on conditions). Is this normal for 68k? There is no noticeable burning oil smell or smoke, and no major puddles under the car.

Should I take the thing in to my "trusty" mechanic? If so, what kind of things might be wrong? Forewarned is fore-armed, I figure. I would like to get this car in tip-top condition.

Thanks!

Check your flame arrestor. Back pressure forces oil through the seals and it will probably burn more. I have had good luck running without one for a couple hundred thousand miles. Mileage sounds about right for an automatic.

I've 765 turbo. City milage with heavy foot is 18-19MPG. Open road 28MPG. Something is seriously wrong! Check for burnt paint at the block, under the intake manifold. If paint is burnt engine has been overheated. This will cause lost compression. Do compression test and leak-down test. Sometimes neither one shows much due to turbos low compression. My motor's 125000 and it doesn't use any oil between changes. I think your motor's very sick !

The turbo models don't have the flame trap. They do have the hose and fitting and still get plugged and need to be cleaned periodically. This being plugged would definitely cause increased oil consumption.

FYI, I took my 740T to my trusty mechanic, and he said everything checked out fine. To calm my paranoia, he offered to perform "complete B6 service" (could be "BG Service"- can't read his writing for sure) for $126, which involves running the car on something called "B6 Induction Cleaner" rather than gas for a short time to clean the injectors, throttle body, intake system, pistons, and valves. He recommends doing this every 60k miles. Has anyone heard of this? Is it useful?

Steve
