Nauseating Cruise Control[ALL/1998] posted by Steve Vereb on

Whenever I set the cruise control on my 91 944T, I get an on the gas, off the gas, one the gas, off the gas ride. Seems like the boost cuts in, realizes it is going to fast, cuts off, then cuts in again. This cycle last 8-10 seconds and creates a sickening ride. Anyone experience similar circumstances, and what did you do to correct it. thanks

I haven't got cruise control in my car, but it sounds like the PID controller in your cruise control unit is out of whack. I don't know if they can be retuned...but it is defenately a controller problem.

P.I.D stands for proportional integral derivative, it is a common control method used in all sorts of applications from industrial ph controllers to boiler gas firing mechanisms.

If you have too much free play between the cruise vacuum servo and the throttle linkage, this can cause the exact symptoms you describe. Could be a simple adjustment. Look at where the throttle cable hooks to the motor. Do you see the black round "servo" just in back of that? The cable going to the throttle should have a little free play but no more than a few millimeters. The black threaded screw "thingie" at the servo is the adjuster designed to take up this slack.
