1984 245DL driveshaft difficulties[ALL/1998] posted by Tom Graham on

I have removed the driveshaft on my 1984 245DL w/M46 transmission to replace the u-joints and center support bearing. I cannot get the two pieces separated. They seem to have seized at the splined section. Any ideas for separation? If I can't get it separated and use the the driveshaft with the two pieces seized will I endanger the transmission or differential? I appreciate your help. Tom

Hmmm. I did the same job on my 240 and didn't have any trouble, but yours sounds like a real pip. I'm not sure how you can get the spline separated, besides plenty of WD40 and the "brute force" method. When you get all the U.J.s and bearing replaced, clean off the shaft on either side of the splined joint and check for little alignment arrows. Yours may or may not have it, but if it does, it's nice to know that the shaft is back together properly. They're small and hard to see, but if you clean off all the grease and crud, you should be able to find them, if they're there. When I bought my 240, the joint was about 45degrees off. Yikes! I had a nasty take-off shudder that went away as soon as I replaced the bearing and reinstalled the shaft correctly.
Good luck with the seized joint. I don't know if it can cause damage to the trans. of diff. but I'm sure it's not a good idea to run it that way.

TRY HEAT! 1984 245DL driveshaft difficulties[ALL/1998] posted by Mr. Tool on

Try plenty of penatrating oil (not nessasarily WD-40). Use some stuff especially made for penatrating. ALSO, apply heat to the joint via a propane torch. careful here. good luck mr. tool 245dl 1987
