H-E-L-P 240 Won't Start After Fuel Filter Replacement[ALL/1998] posted by Steve B on

Hello -- I need some rapid assistance. I just replaced the fuel filter on a 1990 240 Wagon. I marked the bolts to ensure gas would flow after replacing the filter. Now it won't start -- Occasionally it starts and runs briefly but will never idle. Mostly it just sputters without starting.
I need some rapid advice because this is our only car and my wife and I need to go to WORK -!!
Thanks
Steve B.

You might have loosened the electrical connections on the fuel pump while doing the change. Get back under there and see that the two wires that are on either side of the fuel pump outlet fitting are plugged in.

If it's not pump wiring; Check if you mounted the filter backward. There's an arrow to show the correct flow.

If your 1990 is like My 83 240, I accidentially reversed the two wires on the pump when I put it all back together. (I removed both the Pump and Filter to get the filter loose). You might try that.
Also did you replace the washers on the filter? You might have leaks if you didn't and the dealer won't usually tell you that you need them. (both washers are around .30 cents each).
Good Luck
Mark

If all the logical solutions fail, revert to the old filter (if you didn't throw it out). Possibilities A. New filter may be faulty (unlikely). B. Pressure regulation is faulty, and car is actually happier with reduced system pressure. Keith 245/80 + 440/94
