How do you turn off the service due light on the 850. ipd sells a device for a couple of hundred bucks to do the job but I can't beleive it could be that complicated.

The only way that I know is thru the OBD-II connector for the later 850 and the S/V70. I tried to get the info from Volvo about which PID is used for the instrument cluster and which message need to be send to reset the light. With this info, it may be possible to built a cheap device to reset the light. Or maybe one can use an OBD-II tester, get it in manual mode and enter directly the PID and command. Volvo N.A. did not want to gives me this info. This info was provided to the mfg. of that device such they can built that device. This device may cost $5 to built but they charge you almost $300. The signal to turn on this light is generated by the micro-controller in the instrument cluster. This micro is on the OBD-II car bus. You cannot cut a wire to turn it off. Removing the bulb is almost impossible without disassembling the whole dashboard. The cheaper (and the one I am using now) is using a small rectangular piece of black electrical tape over the light. This way you forget it and you spend $300 on somethig else.

Another approach will be to capture with a logic analyzer the message the is getting out of that reset tool when it is plugged. This info can be used to do a circuit that will repeat the same message. The OBD-II port used a bidirectional single wire that carries the information.

You don't necessarily need this tool. What year is your 850? Does your car have a sunroof?

It is an 97 855 GLT. The GLT has a sunroof.

Leo, Mark and Bill, thanks for the replies on the 850 service light. Mark, in response to your question, my 750 is a 1996 without a sunroof. Sounds like I need "the tool" or else a friend who has one.

I happened to pick up a Hayne's repair manual for the 850. This particular book says not a problem- just plug in a jumper wire on the diagnostic assembly in front of the wiper fluid reservoir. Sounded great until I couldn't find any such assembly in my car. Apparently Volvo's sold in England have such a device. How come they're so special?

No, its not that the Euro Volvos have the DLC (Data Link Connector)...Its that those models after 1995 did away with it. For instance, my OBDII compliant 1995 854T has this unit, and it has proven invaluable not just in allowing me to reset my own light, but in also allowing me to decode any engine , transmission, or brake fault codes. This extremely handy!

96 and later 850's are OBD II ECU units and require the reset tool. Earlier models are OBD I and can be reset under the hood.

THIS IS VOLVO'S WAY OF HANDCUFFING YOU TO THE DEALER.I OWN A REPAIR SHOP
AND I AM ON MY THIRD VERSION OF THE OBDII RESET TOOL WHICH WILL CHANGE AGAIN IN 1999

Bill, my '95 854T manual clearly states that it too is OBDII compliant. Of course, it also has the under hood DLC.

OOPS You are right Paul. The switch from under hood DLC to the computer connection in the center console (95 to 96)was independent of the change from OBD I to OBD II.

You might try a product called OBDTool. This product is a cable that connects to the OBDII port on one end and the parallel port of a PC on the other end (most usefully a notebook computer). With the cable and included software, you can read all the OBDII data and reset things like the check engine light. I am not sure whether the program knows the specific code to turn off the service light. However, you can check with the manufacturer of the product to find out. I have used OBDTool with my other car (a 1995 Mitsu Eclipse GSX) and it works quite well. It costs about $250 (but group discounts have been arranged in the past). You can find more info on the net (I don't have the URL, but just search for OBDTool).

I have checked before with John Grable, the developper of OBDTool. He does not have the code to access this function. I tried to get this info from Volvo N.A. without success. This tool can read a trouble code and reset the engine service light. But for the service reminder light, it is a Volvo proprietary code. If that info was available, it maybe possible with such tool to reset the light using the manual code entry mode.
