'89 780 - B230 Turbo Distributor Removal[ALL/1998] posted by Jim Bradley on

I have discovered a broken plastic connector (for the Hall sensor wires) on the bottom of the cam-driven distributor. The fact that the parts counter man knew the part number from memory suggests that this is not an uncommon problem, but at $1.36, it's probably the cheapest Volvo part I've bought in years. I assume that I need to remove the distributor to change this connector. Other than marking the position of the distributor with respect to the head are there any special procedures and/or precautions for removing the distributor? Thanks in advance!

Mark it before removal to preserve your timing (it would be best to check timing when you're through). The dist. is driven by an offset slot, so it can't go in but the right way and in time.

Be sure to get spare pin sleeves and pins as these frequently "escape" during the repair/install process!

Yeah, I put the designer of the Hall Switch connector right up there with Lord Lucas on my pedestal of "Nice Try-Now Go Fix It!" repute...

Why do the English drink warm beer? They have LUCAS refrigerators!

Thanks for the good humor!

I would like to know that part no. for the plastic piece on the distributor.
My local dealer just gave me a blank look and couldn't find it.

Thanks Roy

The part number on the official Volvo part bag is 1346793.

I have found the safest (for the safety of the connectors) method of removing the old one is to cut it into sections with a pair of wire cutters. Otherwise you can damage the connectors.
