Conversion diesel to gas[ALL/1998] posted by JOHN FINERAN on

I have a '84 240 diesel wagon, nice car, bad engine, manual/od drive train and a '82 240 tubro sedan, parts car, good engine / manual/od drivie train. Would like to install gas turbo engine into diesel wagon. What problems are expected with this conversion? Is diesel wiring harness adaptable for use with turbo connections and instument cluster? What about engine and drive-line mountings and conections and rear-end ratios? Fuel pump, tank, fuel systems and exaust modifications? Suspension modifications to correct engine weight difference? thx in advance for anyone who will share their knowledge. Anyone need a vw 6 cyl diesel engine, complete, less crank a one con-rod?

I am interested in your diesel engine for parts if you are in
California. I live near Sacramento. How many miles on the engine
when it failed? Why did it fail? My 85 740 GLE turbo diesel has
160,000 miles. I am planning to keep it a long time.

Richard,
the wv 6cyl naturally asprirated engine failed @168000 mi, due to a young drivers' inability to understand warning lights, after a quick oil service person stripped out the oil drain plug. Block & head cked ok, no cracks, bores within specs., cam and bearing esp.rear in spec.;injector pump and alt, ok. Needs Crank shaft and 1 con-rod. Also have a manual w/OD trans for same. Location is LA; that's LOUISIANA for you western guys, freight should be approx. $100.00.

We owners of the bastard diesel should get together. I don't mind being the clearinghouse. Just need a way to disseminate information. Any ideas?

I agree the adopted engine was noisey, smelly and oily, but did serve well as a poor man's Mercedes. Changing the injector pump belt a unpleasant task, but often required. This design was said to lessen wear on the front OHC bearings, but was less expensive to manufacture than a gear driven design. I am sure that there are many still running with connecting rods failure on #6, as it is hard to hear if a rod is knocking over normal engine noise and incorrect pump timing. Maybe thats where Mercedes got their 5 cyl. design. Still looking for info on D24 to B21FT swap. Got a D24 5 cly for parts. What other application was this VW fatherless engine used? I have not seen it industrial or marine use.
