Does anyone have information on how to tell if a catalytic converter is bad? I have an 83 240 turbo.

You can hook a vacuum gauge up to intake manifold vacuum. See where it sits at idle, rev it up to about 2500. The needle will go down and then come back up (pretty quickly) and should stabilize several inches (of mercury) above where it was at idle and stay there. Also, you can hook up a backpressure gauge in the exhaust system in front of the cat., but few people have one of these available. ---Brian

hi,
we have a 84 244 turbo and a dealership told us our catalytic converter (CC) was melted due to overlean fuel mixture. a phone call to other dealers revealed a price from $600 to a high of $1300. so we had the lower cost CC installed at a dealership (original volvo parts)....
upon testing of the car, our car still had the same problem, which is uneven power output (car has hiccup like syptoms), well we are not happy with this outcome, so i would reccomend to remove the CC and run it without a CC for a test drive and try to see\feel if it does make a difference...
