Brake master cylinder changing[ALL/1998] posted by Keith Hyndes on

Recently my 1980 245GL (B21E) suffered a leaking ATE brake master cylinder, where fluid leaked out the rear, into the booster. To make the change quick and easy, do the following:
1. Prime the new cylinder with fresh brake fluid by pouring fluid in the 2 ports, with the plastic
plugs in the outlets loosened off, pushing the piston back and forth with your thumb.
2. Crack, and then loosely tighten the pipe fittings and the 2 mounting bolts.
3. Prise off the reservoir (wear safety glasses, as it will probably fly off and spray you with brake fluid).
4. Clean out the reservoir before fitting it to the new cylinder.
5. Partly fill the reservoir.
6. Now go.......quickly get the pipe fittings off, and into the new cylinder.
7. Tighten everything........and with any luck you won't need to bleed your brakes.
