suspension noise in 850 Turbo wagon[ALL/1998] posted by Benny Chien on

My 95 850 Turbo wagon makes a brief "scraping" sound in the rear suspension area a few seconds after driving it--e.g. 100 feet or so. I think and hope it's the self-leveling suspension. But I don't know if I have the option. Wonder if the sound is common to all wagons or is the self-leveling suspension. Thanks for any input.

Are you sure the noise is coming from the rear? Your car is equipped
with anti-lock brakes. The ABS does a self-test at 18 ot 20 miles per
hour, the first time you reach this speed, after each time the engine
is started. This is completely normal. It has often been described as
a grinding noise, a rattle, or the sound of ice falling into a metal
bucket. It is described in your owners manual, under ABS. Check to see
if the noise you are hearing, occurs under these conditios. Otherwise,
the only other noise from the rear I have heard, is the rattle from
a misadjusted (loose) parking brake cable. If the noise goes away when
you drive with parking brake lever engaged a click or two, it needs
adjustment. The brake is adjusted properly, if it holds the vehicle
in place, when the handle is fully applied, between 3 to 8 clicks.
I hope this helps.

Dear Jim C.,
I read your response RE noise with 850 turbo at startup with interest.
I have a 95 850 T5R sedan, and this noise has been puzzling me and my
mechanic for sometime. I will check the owners manual about the ABS, but
that noise sure is loud.

Jim is probably right with the ABS "self test" mode. The only noises I have encountered from the rear are the parking brake not adjusted tight enough (Jims right again) or if the rear spring shifts in the lower spring seat, it can rub on the side of the seat. Shifting/centering the spring cured this noise. Normally, though, the spring won't move unless something "moves" the spring (external forces).
