speedometer/transmission[ALL/1998] posted by jkarau on

The speedometer recently quit on my 1984 240 series volvo. It has an automatic transmision with OD and app. 190,000km on it. My initial thought was the speedometer cable was broken, but when the cable is disconnected from the transmission and spun the speedometer works. This leads me to believe something is amiss with where the speedometer cable turns of the transmission. Any experiences out there with a similar problem? I would be interested to know if there is any alternative to tearing down the tranny as that sounds involved, or if anyone has knowledge on the procedure and what is involved.
Thanks!

If your speedo is driven by a cable from the tranny, there is a worm gear on the tranny output shaft. That drives a fiber spur gear. I think that is connected to the speedo shaft with a small square cross section pin that is designed to break if there is too much drag in the speedo cable. This is supposed to prevent damage to the cable/speedo head.
Either the pin can break, or the fiber gear can strip, though the gears normally last a long time. I would check both. You can remove the fiber gear by unfastening the clamp on the tranny where the cable goes in. You should be able to remove the small seal assy and the gear which is mounted on the short shaft that comes out through the seal assy.
If the fiber gear is damaged, I recommend that you try to determine why it failed before simply replacing it. Does the cable turn freely, or is there a notchy feel to it when you spin it?

The speedo drive gear in an automatic transmission Volvo of that vintage
is retained by the pressure of the output flange being held against it by
the bolt on end of transmission output shaft. Remove your driveshaft and
tighten the bolt to 45 ft-lbs. This should fix it. It is a metal worm gear
and it would be very unlikely to be damaged.

Special thanks to Steve...your prognosis was coreect re: worn fiber spur gear, all bettter thanks to you. Mr. Abe Crombie(?) your information was greatly appreciated, however I think not quite correct.
