Odometer fixes[ALL/1998] posted by Michael Chiu on

I have a 1987 240DL, and the odometer isn't working now. I opened it up, and there is a plastic gear inside with two broken teeth, which means the small motor is spinning in place. Does anyone know of where I could possibly find such a gear (about the size of a quarter) or a junkyard with a 1987 or newer 240? I've only been able to find older 240s. The K number is 10042. I'd really like to stay away from spending the $90 that people want to charge me for a used speedometer.

When you consider why the gear broke, you might decide not to buy a new gear. I had a Volvo 164E that broke an odometer drive gear, so I replaced the speedometer, and of course, the odometer in that one had the same problem. Only this time instead of breaking a gear, it broke the speedometer cable. My final solution was to re-install the original speedometer after removing what was left of the odometer drive gear. No odometer, but at least the speedometer worked.

Sometimes it's best to take the path of least resistance. -Glenn.
