Air Conditioners[ALL/1998] posted by Owen Woodland on

For those not yet familiar with it, I have a 1976 244 DL
It has air conditioning, but after it was regassed last time,
a hose on it split, so bye bye [ozone depleting] refrigerant.
It's now illegal to get the stuff in Australia (What is it, R12 or
something like that). Is it possible to use the new style refrigerant
["non-ozone depleting", yeah right] into a system designed for the older
style. I get the feeling from what I have seen up to date that no, you
can't, but please, give me some input on this.
Thanks.

Check my web page for information about converting your refrigerant from R-12 to R134a. -Glenn.

Owen,
One of the most popular alternative refrigerant is R-134. You can retrofit your system to R-134, but it could be rather costly depending on what you have done. R-134 has a higher boiling point than R-12 and generally will not cool as well as your original R-12 cooled. This would be noticable on very hot days and oin stop and go driving on hot days.
The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has a good website with lots of information about retrofiting a/c systems and alternative refrigerants.
Are you sure that R-12 is illlegal in Australia?
Good luck.

Yes, R12 is illegal, as is the Halon stuff they use in yellow fire extinguishers
(which is the sort that we have at home tee hee).
