854 GLT (92) 105000 km: Clunking in the steering column, occasional pulling to the left[ALL/1998] posted by Ted on

Hi!

Since I am a complete layman as far as cars are concerned, I would like to place two questions, which could not be answered by my mechanic (Volvo-dealer). The car is maintained on a regular basis by the dealer.

1. There is a clunking noise audible from inside the steering column, when driving on a uneven surface, like gravel or when running over a short bump or pot hole. This noise is significantly decreased, when the steering wheel is completely telescoped towards the driver’s seat. The clunking seems to get more intense, when the brake is applied during driving on an uneven surface.
I do not have any other trouble with the steering and, as the mechanic said, the front axis is OK (after the replacement of the stabilizer bar and a traverse control arm).
It is enervating - but: Is it a problem at all?

2. Occasionally I get a strong pull to the left, when I brake. This effect occurs only occasionally and does not depend on weather conditions, moisture or dirt on the brake disks. If it happens at low speed during the car comes to a stop and I do not apply opposite lock, it comes to a complete lock of the front wheels to the left (as long as the brake is applied).
The brakes have several times beeing tested by the dealer without showing any kind of malfunction.
If the effect has appeared once, it does not appear for a while. Should it happen at high speeds (I am mailing from Germany.....) it could really be a problem.

I would be happy if anyone has an idea of what is wrong with the car. Many thanks in advance!
