I recently had a problem with the ABS light in my '96 855. The light would come on for a few minutes and then turn off. One day the light stayed on for an entire day. The dealer inspected the vehicle and found fault codes 311 and 211 in the computer. I was told that this was a "known problem" by the mechanic. The wiring was "upgraded pre factory instructions". Does anyone know what exctly what the "known problem" is, and what the "wiring upgrade" is?
Thanks,
Keith

we just had the same service done, it apparently involves some wire splices, there is a service bull on it. Did your TRACS OFF light come on at the same time like ours?

The ABS and TRACS are interlinked.
The wiring update is simply to replace the connectors for the front wheel sensor wires. The connection under the fuse panel has been a source of problems such as what you have experienced. The update doesn't change any wiring, just redoes a couple of connections (which are obviously very sensitive). When you look at the affected connectors, they look perfectly fine. Replacing them normally fixes any symptoms.

Mark,
My Uncle has a 91' I think? 740 Turbo that has the same symptoms with the Abs light coming on. When I car was still under warrenty he took it back to the Volvo dealer and got them the cahange the ABS unit, The wheel sensor but, that did not solve the problem. The volvo guys even read the fault codes still no luck. Now sometimes the ABS light comes on sometimes it goes off and sometimes it stays on! Could the cure for this problem be the same as the 96' 855???
Regards,
Henry

I've never heard of a 700 with a common problem of the 800 type. Does his 700 have a lot of miles? Does he have a big wad of keys on his key ring? If the electrical part of the ignition switch has an intermittent open circuit in it, he may get these symptoms. Have him wiggle the key in the ignition when it happens.

Yes, he does have over 100,00O miles+ on his 91 740 Turbo. As for the keys
I think he only has about 5 keys.
