86 760 Lumbar Support[ALL/1998] posted by Paul on

I have a 1986 760 Turbo wagon. The lumbar support for the driver's power seat gave out a few days ago. Has anyone replaced one of these? Can you tell me what is involved? Any advice will be appreciated.

To PAUL
740 lumbar is not a big problem, it is a hinge inside the backrest connected to
a strap.remove the trim at the lower corners of the backrest, lean the backrest
to the rear and cut the hog rings that hold the upholstry, roll the upholsty up.pull out on the adjustment knob and turn counter clockwise to remove. then remove the trim. ring. unscrew the hinge from the side, then from the back unhook the hinge. tap the holes in the new hinge to match the 3 new screws that should be attained when ordering the hinge will aid in installation . the screws will self tap if slight pressure is used if no tap is available. good luck.

GRV's advice is good. You can also go up this list and see responses to my question about my 85 740 seat. Got some good advice. You don't need to remove the seat as I did. Re GRV' note about tapping the adjuster screws holes - when I picked up the new $18 part at the dealer, I noticed the screw holes were larger and unthreaded. Instead of getting new bolts and matching nuts, I just pulled the metal plates out of the old adjuster (correct holes & threads) & put them in the new adjuster. Being an engineer I just had to try fixing the old part with super glue and through bolting. Don't waste ur time. Plastic fatigue won.

My problem with the lumbar support system was a broken spring steel clip which connects the support strap to the tensioning adjuster at the left side of the seat. Carefully bend open & disconnect the hog rings at the bottom of the seat back upholstry & pull it up to uncover the lumbar support strap. If the spring steel clip is broken throw it away & use 3' of safety wire to lash the strap fitting to the adjuster where the clip whonce was. I did this last weekend to rave reviews..
