240 Brakes[ALL/1998] posted by Rob Kirtley on

I am getting parts together to do a brake job on my 84 240. I called the local dealer looking for the Volvo special tools # 2919 & #2918. They do not have this part number and said they no longer exist. Do I need these tools to do a good job and if so does anyone know where I can find them.
Thanks,
Rob

What are the tools supposed to do? Are you overhauling the calipers? ---Brian

I'm slowly (due to rotors lost in mail) coming to the end of the the complete brake job on the 262C.....which included bearing and seal replacement, new parking brake shoes, I rebuilt the calipers and of course new rotors.
Oh yeah and stainless steel brake lines to replace rubber tubes....
I recommend cleaning everything very well prior to any disassembly (well, take the wheels off!)....I mean with a good brass brush and cleaner (I like that new water soluable Castrol stuff - it contains NaOH, so be careful, wear eye and hand protection - practice safe soap)....I mean clean as new!
Did I say clean....yes VERY CLEAN.....you'll also need several (I needed about 10) cans of spray brake cleaner!!!!
After cleaning everthing WELL....you can begin disassembly at the hubs...follow a good manual.....EXCEPT....the part about:
SPECIAL TOOLS: didn't need any.....
Even the rear bearing retainer install......just used a regular press...
PS Don't order your rotors from Imparts....mine haven't arrived yet...

Sorry I could have been more descriptive. These 2 parts the 2919 & 2918 are for setting the angle on the rear ATE brake rotors. 2919 is for checking the disc angle and 2918 is for adjusting the angle. Any ideas, Do I need to do this? Ccan it be eyeballed in, not my prefered way. Does anyone know where I can find these tools.
Thanks,
Rob

I think I've done just about everything you can do on 240 disk brakes and the only special tool I ever used was a block of wood (to make it easy to pop multiple pistons out of a caliper) made from a template in the manual. I see the tools you're talking about in the Volvo manual. They're not necessary to do the job right. According to the book, they're for adjusting the position of the piston in the caliper "to avoid brake squeal". If you get them close to the correct position before you push them in you shouldn't even need the tools. Have fun. ---Brian

Didn't need those tools. Nor do most (if not all) Volvo service dudes...
