U-Joints, etc. - '73 142[ALL/1998] posted by Craig on

Morning,

It's time to replace the u-joints, bearing, and flanges on my '73 142 (auto-trans). My question(s) is such: Is there any issue that may not be obvious now, that will be an obvious issue when I get the old parts out - i.e. alignment, and so on. This job seems like an easy one, but that's what I've thought about many other items on this car. I can't put this one off any longer, but am I going to need a shop to assist in any protion of this job?

One (more) problem down, hundreds more to go!

Thanks in advance for any input,

Craig

Ha! Sorry, just couldn't keep it down. You're right, changing u-joints looks like a pretty straightforward task. But I'm here to tell you, getting those buggers out can be one heckuva chore.

Make sure you have a very stout drift to use when hammering on the u-joints. It wouldn't hurt to use a 5-pound hammer. Wear gloves. Above all, be very careful how you hit them. If you bend a flange, your driveshaft will never be still again.

Changing u-joints is a very do-able job, but don't underestimate it. Get the driveshaft out and onto a workbench (preferably in a big vise) where you can get a good shot at the u-joints. Allow twice as much time as you think it will take. Have fun! -Glenn.

Say, come to think of it, I have a rubber center bearing mount that I bought to install in a '73 164. I never could get the driveshaft out of the car because the u-bolt nuts were rounded off. If you think the bearing mount will fit your car, drop a line. I'd be glad to send it to you for the cost of shipping. -Glenn.
