Rust Stoppers???[ALL/1998] posted by Glenn R. Goodspeed on

Just bought a rusty car that's not worth a complete restoration. I'm wondering if anyone has experience using POR-15 or Hirsch Miracle Paint. These products are advertised to stop the spread of rust by painting over existing rusty metal. Sounds too good to be true. Is it? -Glenn.

POR-15 is really great!!! I've used it on cars and rusty pipes....Follow directions completely....don't skimp on the cleanliness...the stuff (like most coatings) hates silicones, organics etc...and will not stitck!! So bare metal and "hard" oxidation are essential. What is hard rust? No flakiness, no dusty coatings....just darkened oxidation with peaks of bare metal.....A selection of wire brass/brass coated wire wheels on a fast drill motor will be essential. Also, clean really well when you are at the bare metal stage and use the metal prep. juice. "Hard" oxidation will become apparent when treated with the metal prep.
If you have through holes.....well....suffice to say you really should get to both sides and should be sealed with real metal...ie welded.
Anyhow with POR-15 wear your latex/tight impermeable gloves or you'll be wearing POR-15....been there done that.
OH....I've never heard of Hirsch Miracle Paint....I've heard of Hirsch...I think.
