1978 242 DL[ALL/1998] posted by Sam on

I recently purchased this 242 DL, and I have a few questions...
1--How interchangeable are parts from the various 240 models? for instance, i need an odometer cable, are my parts compatible with, let's say an '81 242?
2--Which service books are better, the Volvo ones, or the manuals you buy at the parts stores? For the money, that is....
3--How much would it cost to retrofit an A/C system onto my vehicle?
I must say that I think these vehicles are great, and I'll try and stick with this one a while
Thanks,
Sam

Speedo cables are pretty much interchangible between years, the main difference
being in different lenths for different transmission combinations.
I don't know about AC costs, but the only Volvo pieces you need would
be the evaporator and the bracket for the compressor/power steering.
The rest is pretty much off the shelf parts.

Most 242 stuff can be swapped except doors, obviously, The AC retro wouldn't be hard-hit a salvage yard and get the compressor bracket, and try finding a 93 or later evaporator unit-maybe even a 93 center console unit. The rest buy new so it's r134a compliant and have a shop put it in and do the charge.
