1988 740 Dash[ALL/1998] posted by Kris Gronfor on

I recently purchased a 1988 Volvo 740 GLE. I paid a premium price
because it is in beautiful condition, and has relatively low miles
(80,000). When I first saw the car I thought the dash may have looked a
little odd. The top half (with gauges ect.)is black, and the bottom
half matches the interior of the car which is beige. I more closely at
the original sticker and saw listed “Color-Keyed Instrument Panel”. So
I am asking if this is the way the dash is suppose to be, or has it been
messed around with?

Check the lower edges to see if there is a plastic dash cover installed. IPD and others sold a black plastic dash cover that would slip over the old dashand secure w/ double faced tape. The defroster vents, etc. would reinstall ontop of the new cover in new holes that lined up w/ old ones. This was a simple solution to cracked dash- you could dye/paint it to match but remove it first. I think they only came in black/blue.
Of course I could be wrong and this was dealer/volvo thing but I've never sen one like this.
If you do remove it for daying/painting be careful of cracking it as the 3M double faced tape can be quite tenatious in it's refusal to give up easily.

Kris,
I have trouble remembering what happened yesterday, so the dates won't be exact. Originally 740's had solid colored dashes. In the mid to late 80's Volvo went to a black top and color keyed bottom. Some of the color keyed dashes were cracking. The replacement parts had black caps same as the new models. The good news is the black dashes seldom if ever cracked. Your car was probably equipped this way from the factory. Even if it wasn't, I wouldn't be concerned. Our '92 960 has a charcoal dash with a black top. My wife has driven the car for 5 years and we still had to go out and look at the dash just now.
