122 floor pan surface rust[ALL/1998] posted by perry montgomery on

Good evening all,
I am preparing to put a carpet kit in my 122 to replace
what is left of my floor mat. I decided to take a look at
the condition of the floor. Can open...worms everywhere!
As was mentioned by the former owner, my 122 had the
problem of leakage from around the dash/windshield, which
was repaired adaquately as far as I can tell. But the
damage was already done. It all started with the glove
shelf being a little rusty. Refurbished that. Here is
where it gets a little messy. The floor pan was a lovely
shade of rust. The paint was bubbling and flacking.
There is no cancer as of yet and underneath looks solid.
so, here are my questions:
1. Is the tar paper I found under the mat factory, or was
this an attempt at fixing or hiding a small rust problem?
2. What is the best way of treating this problem? I have
heard mention of everything between muratic acid to
POR-15(or something to that affect) to rust inhibiting
primer to some substance that changes the rust to a
paintable surface? I would like to solve the problem not
cover it!
3. What is the best method of prepping the floor pan, wire
brush, chemicals, or??? ?
I am originaly from Arizona where cars melt but dont rust
so I have little experience in this matter.
Helpful hints/horror stories welcome

I have been working on an old 544 that has some surface rust in a few areas. I have read all the notes about muratic acid and the like. No thanks. I have a little wire wheel attachment for my electric drill motor. Works well and works fast. You end up with bare metal ready for primer. All you need to do is vacuum up the dust and paint.

Another comment. The tar paper is factory. If you would like to replace it, it might be a good idea to paint the floor with real paint to seal of the primer.
The tarpaper has a noticable effect on the noise, but itīs not cheap.

A replacement for the tar paper that will also act as a sound deadener is "Ice Guard" or like product sold in Home Depot type stores. Or hit your local construction site, Ice Cold 6 pack inhand, and ya might be able to score 10ft or so-usually 24" and 36" widths! Or go dumpster diving at end of the day, I found a 1/4 roll that way.....
