87' 760 w/ dying on cold start[ALL/1998] posted by Bryan Bishop on

Hi all. My 87' 760 Turbo is acting strangely. When I first turn it on in the morning, the car starts fine, but when I put in gear and keep it there with the brakes, the rpms drop *WAY* low for about 2 seconds then it comes right back up. Sometimes it's died like that too, I start it back up, and it's fine. Is this normal??
Also a thanks to Steve Seekins and Mark Klein for their advice on my rattling brakes. Turns out there's no anti-rattle spring. :)

Sounds like typical dirty throttle housing symptoms. Clean with some aerosol carburetor cleaner and see if this helps. You can do a much better job cleaning if you remove the housing from the intake manifold.

Would that cause it to die while accelerating? It only dies on me
when I first turn it on, and shift it in gear, and hold the brake
down. If I turn it on, and shift in gear without the brakes it
doesn't stall. I'm still going to clean out my injectors though,
because I don't know what condition they're in.

The throttle housing is the first thing to check for the symptoms you describe. When you hold the car with the brake, it can change the load on the engine enough to kill the engine at an idle which is too low. Your symptoms could get worse to where it won't idle without using the brake if you let accumulations continue to build up.
