1993, 940 with automatic shifter release problem. Seems when car is started and
brake applied the shifter will not move from park automatically. The shiftlock
button needs to be depressed to move out of park.

Are the brake lights working? If the brake light switch isn't functioning properly, it won't send the correct signal to the shift lock release solenoid.
On some of the newer 900 (and 850s) cars (don't know which years)there is a microswitch which fails and causes this exact symptom. This switch is mounted at the side of the shifter mechanism. There was a recall on this switch and should be taken care of under warranty if your car falls under recall status. Call your dealer and give them your vehicle id number to find out.
